The Augusta House, 152A Augusta Avenue, 2nd Floor
This month the Chi-Series recognizes the winners and finalists of this year's Friends of the Merril Short Story Contest.
Started in 2011, the Friends of the Merril Short Story Contest is an annual speculative fiction contest intended to give both newer and more experienced writers a place to hone their craft. Run by the Friends of the Merril Collection as a means of promoting the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy - a special collection of the Toronto Public Library system housing more than 72,000 (and growing) items across various media, and the largest collection of its kind in North America - the contest is open to international submissions.
The winner of the inaugural 2011-2012 FoMSSC was Sarah Ennals, who took first place with her story "The Emmet". Second and third place went to Jason Ridler ("Rikidōzan and the San Diego Swerve Job") and Dr. Philip Edward Kaldon ("Your First Real Rocket Ship"), respectively.
Winners and finallists confirmed to read their contest entries include Sarah Ennals, James Bambury, Suzanne Church, Claire Humphrey, and Kari Maaren.
We will also be raising money, with half our proceeds gong to the Friends of the Merril Collection (http://www.friendsofmerril.org/), and half going to the ChiSeries, to support our writers!
We will also feature performances from Kari Maaren on the ukulele, and Mike Bryant doing some hilarious poetry! We might even entice some of the contest judges to read. Plus, raffle & prizes & as always the Augusta House's awesome hospitality and cocktails!!
